O mangá de Masamune estreou na edição de maio de 1989 da Young Magazine Kaizokuban da Kodansha. Várias adaptações de anime com diferentes abordagens do material original foram feitas, incluindo os filmes atmosféricos e contemplativos de Mamoru Oshii, Ghost in the Shell e Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence ; a série e filme Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, estilo thriller de mistério ; os filmes Fantasma na Concha: Surgem . que apresentava uma versão mais jovem da heroína principal Motoko Kusanagi; e o 3DCG Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 , que se passa após Stand Alone Complex .
